LANGUAGE ARTS

  • Instructor:

    Recommended Grades: 6-8

    Tuition: $30/month; Supply Fee: $50

In this exciting book club, we will read through the ages and back again! Each book will be set in a different time period focusing on a historical event from a fictional character's perspective. We will discover that middle-school-aged students in these time periods were not so different from us after all!

With this historical fiction approach to history, you will find yourself immersed in events from yesteryear, biting at the bit to find out how our character fares through each twist and turn of the story.

With parent permission, film renditions of important scenes may be shown. Book list will be released before the registration period ends. Please email me with any questions regarding book choices after that. All books are included in the supply fee and will be handed out in class beginning on day one.

  • Instructor:

    Recommended Grades: 9-12

    Tuition: $30/month; Supply Fee: $50

In this high school grades book club, we will read classics, retellings of classics, and graphic novel renditions of classics, too! Each class will be discussion based, with questions stemming from the previous week's reading, so reading at home is required.

To get each class discussion started, students will be given a role in the book club discussion. Each role has one "job" they perform each week, whether it be summarizing the main points of the book or finding important metaphors to share with the group. These "jobs" are great practice for presentations and while it might be out of your comfort zone, your presentation need not be more than 30-60 seconds per class, and the format of the presentation is up to you! The floor is then open for discussion, and finally, we will end with an activity.

With parent permission, film renditions of important scenes will be shown. Book list will be released before the registration period ends. Please email me with any questions regarding book choices after that. All books are included in the supply fee and will be handed out in class beginning on day one.

  • Instructor: Matthew McKnight, mjmcknight@gmail.com

    Recommended Grades: 8 - 12

    Tuition: $30/month; Supply fee: tbd/term

In this middle grade and high school creative-writing class, we will learn about four primary forms of literary expression and engage in a writing practice with each one.

Accordingly, the term will be divided into four month-long sections devoted to each form: Personal Essay, Short Story, One-Act Play, and Poetry. The goals for each section are to develop a basic understanding of the goals, techniques, and characteristics of the form and to try it out. We won't read extensively, but I will guide the students toward reading more deeply and analytically, to developing an understanding of how and why a piece of writing takes its particular shape.

In the course of writing their personal essays, each student will arrive at a single point of view, proposition, or revelation about themselves that will guide the subject matters for their literary explorations in the subsequent sections. For instance, if in the first section a student turns in a disquisition on why they love cheese, they could then move on to write a brief fictional account of the family dramas within a dairy farm (Short Story); a dramatic rendering of one mouse's attempt to hoard his cheddar (One Act Play), and an ode to camembert (Poetry).

Instructor bio: Matthew McKnight is from Washington, DC, and has lived in Rutherfordton for four years. He works as a Senior Editor at Grist, a publication dedicated to reporting about climate change and environmental justice.

Humans have been playing percussion for as long as they've been singing. It is one of the most primal artistic endeavors we can express, and is deeply ingrained in the fibers of our being. The drums themselves (stretched skin over a cylinder) have been around for almost the entire time, and the complexity and intricacies of their musicality has only grown over the centuries.

In this class, lessons will be tailored toward students' individual learning styles, talents, and interests. Through positive and fun lessons that include rudiments, technique, and a fundamentals-first mindset, students will build a strong foundation for a lifetime of musical fulfillment. For drums, it is traditional and useful to start with the single snare drum to learn technique, before moving on to full kits or other percussion instruments.

Does your kindergartener, first grader or second grader enjoy doing hands-on science activities, or arts and crafts? Would they love doing BOTH - at the SAME time - in the SAME class? I’m sure you’ve heard of STEM, but what about STEAM!? It’s an educational movement gaining momentum globally as the need for creativity and problem-solving skills increases in our future workforce! As an instructional approach to learning, “STEAM” is simply an acronym used to represent an integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. By intentionally blending these subjects, STEAM education offers well-rounded learning opportunities that can help prepare students with the knowledge and skills needed to compete in an ever-changing job market. Students will be able to learn STEM concepts while making works of art and engaging in hands-on “lab-tivities” with a different experiment and/or project to complete each week! Engaging in these types of creative learning activities at an early age can help lay the foundation for so many different kinds of knowledge! Comfortable clothing (that can get messy!) is recommended.

We will be honing our writing skills with weekly prompts, our reading skills with historical accounts, communicate in group discussions, and broaden our minds as we imagine the world through the eyes of our historical heroes.

Throughout all the ages, empires, and cultures of history there has been a single uniting factor: the need for nourishment. In this class we will explore the cuisine of great empires and give a brief lesson on the geographic region of origin, history, and cultural significance. Throughout the semester, we will hop through time by putting together recipes, tasting them, and learning about the cultures they come from. The historical time periods will range all the way from foods seen in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and spoken of in the Bible to the decadent Gatsby-esque roaring twenties and war ration survival of WWII. There will be hands-on cooking, food prep, and lots of amazing things to learn.

PRESCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (ages 3-5)

  • Instructor: Jessica Morehouse, M.Ed, JLMorehouse11@gmail.com (Assistant: Meriana DuBose)

    Tuition: $60/mo.; Supply Fee: $50/term

Recommended Ages: Preschool (3-4 years old)

Classes are on a 2-year rotation (new animal themes beginning in Fall 2024 term).

Recommended: Comfortable clothing (that can get messy!) and closed-toe shoes are recommended for your toddler. *Potty-trained preferred but not required - please see description below for more information

Does your toddler enjoy learning about animals, playing games, and doing arts and crafts? With a different animal theme each week, this 90-minute enrichment class helps students gain knowledge about the amazing animal kingdom, as well as engage in artistic expression and pretend play. Activities will rotate every 5-15 minutes (clues time, circle time, fine/gross motor time, arts and crafts time, songs/silly time, and sensory/exploratory time!), since we know your little one likes to stay busy!

While the children are practicing their social, fine/gross motor and creative skills, parents are welcome to either attend class as well or take a well-deserved “parent break” in a separate location on site. In either case, parents must remain on site for the duration of class. Mrs. Jessica and Mrs. Meriana will be co-teaching this mixed-ages class to children ages 3-4 years old, with a Parent Assistant (a parent of one of the children in the class) also present each week. Take-home “extension” activities are provided each week to deepen students’ learning and keep the fun going at home!

*It is preferred that students are potty trained, but this is not a requirement for registration. Please note, however, that teachers and parent assistants are unable to assist with the potty and/or diaper/pull-up changes. If your child needs help with the potty or a potty accident occurs during class, you will be notified and asked to assist with this task.

Note: Please review the Preschool Enrichment Program (PEP) addendum to the Agape Learning Policies & Procedures specific to this class before registering, as we have prepared to adjust certain operations to meet the specific needs of toddlers and their families.

Please contact Mrs. Jessica directly at Morehouse.Agape.Classes@gmail.com with any questions or concerns!

Prerequisite: Potty-trained preferred but not required - please see description below for more information

Does your little one like to help out in the kitchen? Do they love watching and listening to you as you tell them what you’re preparing? Better yet, do they enjoy smelling, touching and tasting whatever you’re cooking? This 45-minute enrichment class is perfect for your curious little chef! With a different culinary adventure to be had each week, students will engage all their senses while learning a variety of cooking skills, including: measuring, pouring, cutting, tearing, scooping, mashing, stirring, kneading, rolling, decorating, cracking, squeezing, peeling, picking, spreading, grinding, whisking - and of course, washing! Students will be able to consume and enjoy their culinary creations during class, with portions equivalent to a “snack size” serving (so as not to spoil their appetite for their next meal!). Kitchen tools used in the classroom are working/functional, but designed specifically for young children (ex. serrated knives made from plastic) to minimize the risk of injury. Food ingredients that are known to be choking hazards will be avoided. Additionally, whole foods that are minimally processed and naturally sweetened will be emphasized and make up the majority of ingredients used; that said, there will be limited/occasional exposure to artificial flavors, colors, etc. (ex. sprinkles). If your child has known food allergies or sensitivities, please contact Mrs. Morehouse directly at Morehouse.Agape.Classes@gmail.com BEFORE registering to determine whether this class would be suitable for them - we want to keep everyone safe, happy and healthy!

Comfortable clothing (that can get messy!) and closed-toe shoes are recommended.

While the children are practicing their little chef-in-training skills, parents are welcome to either attend class as well or take a well-deserved “parent break” in a separate location on site. In either case, parents must remain on site for the duration of class. Does your little one enjoy doing hands-on science activities, or arts and crafts? Would they love doing BOTH - at the SAME time - in the SAME class? I’m sure you’ve heard of STEM, but what about STEAM!? It’s an educational movement gaining momentum globally as the need for creativity and problem-solving skills increases exponentially! As an instructional approach to learning, “STEAM” is simply an acronym used to represent an integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. By intentionally blending these subjects, STEAM education for littles offers well-rounded learning opportunities for gaining a basic understanding of STEM concepts while making works of art and engaging in hands-on “lab-tivities” (a different experiment and/or project to complete each week)! Engaging in these types of creative learning activities at an early age can help lay the foundation for so many different kinds of knowledge and skills! Comfortable clothing (that can get messy!) is recommended.

While the children are practicing their social, fine motor and inquiry skills, parents are welcome to either attend class as well or take a well-deserved “parent break” in a separate location on site.

Does your little one love to move, shake, spin, twirl, bounce, bop, and groove? This 45-minute enrichment class is designed for girls and boys ages 3-5 to learn different dance styles and rhythms. Intended for children interested in experiencing dance in a non-competitive environment, the goal is simply for students to be motivated by having fun and building their confidence through trying something new! Previous dance experience is not required or necessary. This is a survey-style class, meaning that students will be able to “sample” many different genres of dance, such as: Tap, Jazz, Ballet/Lyrical, Hip Hop, Latin, Swing, Line, Contemporary/Modern, Interpretive – in the process, they will enjoy learning different musical genres as well! For this age group, greater emphasis is placed on learning movements, versus whole routines. Additionally, students will practice recognizing and practicing patterns through repeated or alternating movements and sounds; these important skills can translate beyond dance - especially for young learners building foundations in math, music, and more!

Each lesson will also include time for free-style movement. If your child would be excited to wear “dance wear” (ex. Leotards, dance socks, etc.) to class, they are welcome to, but it is certainly not required! Comfortable clothing and shoes is all that is needed.

While children are sharpening their social, gross motor, and artistic expression skills, parents are welcome to either attend class as well or take a well-deserved “parent break” in a separate location on site. In either case, parents must remain on site for the duration of class.
